জানাযা একটি বিশেষ প্রার্থনা যা কোনো মৃত মুসলমানকে কবর দেয়ার পূর্বে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। সচরাচর এটি জানাযার নামাজ নামে অভিহিত হয়। মুসলমান অর্থাৎ ইসলাম ধর্মামলম্বীদের জন্য এটি ফরযে কেফায়া বা সমাাজের জন্য আবশ্যকীয় দায়িত্ব। কোনো মুসলমানের মৃত্যু হলে মুসলমান সমাজের পক্ষ থেকে অবশ্যই জানাযার নামাজ পাঠ করতে হবে। তবে কোনো এলাকা বা গোত্রের পক্ষ থেকে একজন আদায় করলে সকলের পক্ষ থেকে তা আদায় হয়ে যায়।
জানাযার নামায ও তার ফযীলত
যখন কোন মুসলমান মারা যায় তখন তার আত্মার শান্তির জন্য বিশেষভাবে কিছু দুআ করা হয়। ঐ বিশেষ প্রক্রিয়ায় দুআ করার নাম জানাযার নামাজ। এই নামাযের ফযীলত সম্পর্কে রাসুলুল্লাহ সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়াসাল্লাম বলেন, যে ব্যক্তি কোন মুসলমানের জানাযায় শরীক হয়ে নামাজ পড়ে এবং তাকে কবরও দেয় সে দু কীরাত নেকী পায়। প্রত্যেক কীরাত উহুদ পাহাড় সমান নেকী। আর যে ব্যক্তি শুধু জানাযায় নামাজ পড়ে এবং মাটি দেয় না সে এক কীরাত নেকী পাবে (বুখারী ও মুসলিম, মিশকাত, ১৪৪ পৃষ্ঠা)।
কাফন
কোন মৃত মুসলমানকে মাটিতে দাফন করার পূর্বে যে কাপড় পরানো হয় তা কাফন নামে অভিহিত। কাফন ব্যতিরেকে জানাযা পড়া যায় না।
